Someone at the desk can assist you with the scanner. Generally there are a few things to remember though. First make sure the mode is on Professional. If you are scanning a big stack of pages, you will want to use the top feeder. You need to make sure the document source option says ADF. If you are scanning something small like an ID, or scanning a book, you will want to choose the table option.

Choose 24 bit color for a color scan or 8 bit grey scale for black and white.  For a book or document, 150 dpi resolution is fine. For something like a photo, you could go up to 350 or 600. The higher the dpi though, the longer it takes to scan.

If you click on the little file icon before scanning, you can choose where to save the document under location. You can also name the document in the prefix box and choose format type. Most of the time you will want to choose PDF for this.

If you are scanning the document on the flatbed of the scanner, you will want to choose preview before you scan. By doing this you can drag the dotted line around the previewed document, then press scan to get just the document and not the rest of the flatbed.

In addition to the flatbed scanner, the Journalism Library now has a KIC book scanner as well. Ask for assistance as the desk.
