Books and other materials in Special Collections are housed in closed stacks, which means that patrons cannot browse the way they can in the rest of Ellis Library. To use most print materials, please come to the Special Collections reading room (room 401). You may want to check the department's hours first.
When you arrive in the reading room, you will be asked to store your belongings on the shelves or in the secure lockers provided on site and to wash your hands in preparation for handling the materials. Staff members will check your photo ID and get you set up in their system. They will then help you fill out requests for each item you would like to see and get the materials out of the stacks for you.
You can facilitate the retrieval process if you have have the call number of the item you are interested in seeing. You can use books and other materials in the Reading Room. Most Special Collections materials cannot be checked out. For more information on using Special Collections materials, check out our Book Use Policies.
